Interview with Dr. John Doe: A Journey from Plastic Surgery to Aviation

In this exclusive interview, Dr. Juris Bunker, a prominent plastic surgeon with a thriving practice in Southern California, shares his journey as a pilot and how his passion for flying intersects with his professional life.

Jullie (Aero and Marine Tax Professionals): Hi Dr. Bunker, how are you today?

Dr. Bunker: I'm doing well, thank you. How about you?

Jullie: I'm great, thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to share your success story with us.

Dr. Bunker: I'm happy to be here. It’s always a pleasure to talk about something I’m passionate about.

Jullie: Wonderful! Let's dive right in. Can you start by telling us a bit about yourself?

Dr. Bunker: Sure. I'm a plastic surgeon, and I’ve been practicing aesthetic surgery for quite some time now. I spent about 25 years in Northern California before moving to Southern California in 2002. Since then, I’ve built a large practice here in Orange County, but I still make monthly trips to the Bay Area to see patients.

Jullie: That’s where the aircraft comes into play, right? You fly up to the Bay Area once a month?

Dr. Bunker: Exactly. Flying has become an integral part of my practice. It allows me to maintain my patient relationships in the Bay Area while being based in Southern California.

Jullie: How long have you been a pilot?

Dr. Bunker That’s a bit of a long story. I first got my pilot’s license back in 1977 while I was doing my surgical residency on the East Coast. I flew for a few years, but when I moved to San Francisco to teach at UCSF, I gradually stopped flying. I didn’t have a real mission for it at that time—it was more for fun, like the occasional $100 hamburger run. But when my family moved to Southern California in 2000, I needed a more practical way to commute between Orange County and the Bay Area. That’s when I got back into flying.

Jullie: It sounds like flying became more of a necessity than a hobby. How did you get back into it?

Dr. Bunker: Yes, exactly. After we decided to move to Southern California for my son’s schooling, I spent a year and a half commuting. During that time, I realized I needed a reliable and efficient way to travel. I consulted with a friend who was an airline pilot and decided to start flying again. I bought a few aircraft in quick succession—a Cessna 172, then a brand-new Piper Saratoga, and eventually, a Malibu for its pressurization and anti-ice capabilities. Each step was part of improving my flying skills and adapting to my needs.

Jullie: That’s quite a progression. What led you to purchase the Eclipse jet?

Dr. Bunker: The Malibu was a great aircraft, but we had a couple of maintenance issues that made my wife uneasy. She actually encouraged me to look into buying one of the very light jets, which led to our purchase of the Eclipse. It’s been an excellent choice for us, especially for the business trips to the Bay Area. The flight takes about 50 to 55 minutes, which works out perfectly.

Jullie: So, what has become your mission now with the aircraft?

Dr. Bunker: My mission is to maintain my practice and patient relationships in both Northern and Southern California. Flying allows me to do that efficiently. Beyond that, I also use the aircraft to attend medical meetings and occasionally to fly patients’ home after surgeries. It’s become a crucial part of both my professional and personal life.

Jullie: Do you still enjoy flying, even though it’s primarily for professional reasons?

Dr. Bunker: Absolutely. Flying is a pleasure for me. The preparation and focus required make it a unique experience. Once I’m in the air, it feels like I’m in a different world. All the worries of daily life fade away, and by the time I land, I’m rejuvenated. Plus, it saves me from the frustrations of traffic, which is a huge bonus.

Jullie: That sounds wonderful. How much did you save with Aero and Marine Tax Professionals' help?

Dr. Bunker: We saved around 8% on a $1.7 million aircraft purchase, which comes out to approximately $136,000. It was a significant savings.

Jullie: That’s impressive! What did you like best about our services?

Dr. Bunker: The whole process was very straightforward. Everyone I worked with was organized and knowledgeable. It was essentially a matter of filling in the blanks, and your team took care of the rest. The tax exemption was the obvious highlight, but the professionalism and ease of working with you all were just as valuable.

Jullie: Thank you for the kind words. Would you recommend our services to others?

Dr. Bunker: Absolutely. I’d recommend Aero and Marine Tax Professionals without hesitation.
